We have an exciting opportunity to join our Biopharmaceuticals Medical team (BPM) as an Associate Director, Evidence Strategy within our growing Cardiovascular, Renal & Metabolism (CVRM) Therapy Area (TA) at our vibrant site in Gaithersburg, US. BioPharmaceuticals Medical (BPM) ensures the best patient outcomes by providing healthcare decision-makers around the world with the evidence and confidence they need on AstraZeneca (AZ) therapies. The BPM CVRM Evidence Strategy function leads the Medical Evidence generation across CVRM disease areas. The scope includes different type of scientific studies, ranging from pragmatic interventional studies to observational studies based on secondary data, and internal sponsorship by AZ as well as Externally Sponsored Research by Academia and Health Care Professionals.

Typical Accountabilities

  • Scientific study leadership in epidemiology and observational research studies, including planning, design, execution, analysis, interpretation, and communication of assigned observational studies, applying relevant epidemiological and analytical methods.

  • Ensure that the studies fulfill the requirements set by multiple external collaborators. These include regulators, payers, policy makers, HCPs, and patients. This helps facilitate patient access and appropriate use of AZ medicines.

  • Scientifically lead through study review and governance process as well with external database and registry holders, and agencies and authorities, as applicable and ensure that the study related activities have relevant quality and are conducted in accordance with written procedures and current legal requirements and internal standards.

  • Scientific Committee coordination and Investigator Management provide scientific insights and improve the study's overall value. They build constructive interactions with external scientific experts. Promote good research practices, including considerate utilization of emerging methodologies, and technology and represent AstraZeneca’ position when interacting with external experts, collaborative groups, and contract research organizations

  • Manage briefing of senior leaders and internal collaborators on assigned study, as applicable and in collaboration with relevant roles

  • Active contribution to Evidence strategies and study planning to generate the evidence required to transform health care and make sure the patients get access to the right medicine in the right time

  • Contribute with subject matter expertise in corporate governance procedures for review and approval of medical studies (defined by SOPs) as well as internal trainings

  • Facilitate translation of scientific data to relevant messaging and DA/brand narratives to strengthen communication with applicable external stake holders (incl HCPs, Payers, Policy shapers and Patients)

Essential Skills/Experience:

  • Doctoral level degree (Ph.D. or equivalent) in epidemiology or related health science field and with significant experience (5+ years) in the health care environment, pharmaceutical industry or closely related epidemiological research. Alternatively, an MSc or MPH with substantial experience in the health care environment or equivalent.

  • Excellent knowledge of epidemiological methodology and the ability to apply it internationally within the pharmaceutical industry. You should have hands-on experience in planning, conducting, interpreting results, and publishing studies. This includes using secondary data and performing primary data collection.

  • Communication and collaborative skills with the ability to actively engage and consult with recognized key scientific experts

  • Broad knowledge of healthcare systems and ability to provide proactive and strategic scientific leadership applying emerging methodologies and technologies

  • Ability to provide critical appraisal to study designs and published studies

Our head office in Gaithersburg, MD is purposely designed with collaboration in mind, providing space where teams can come together to strategize, brainstorm and connect on key projects. 

The annual base salary for this position ranges from $149,000-$223,000. However, base pay offered may vary depending on multiple individualized factors, including market location, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience.  In addition, our positions offer a short-term incentive bonus opportunity; eligibility to participate in our equity-based long-term incentive program (salaried roles) or to receive a retirement contribution (hourly roles). Benefits offered included a qualified retirement program [401(k) plan]; paid vacation and holidays; paid leaves; and, health benefits including medical, prescription drug, dental, and vision coverage in accordance with the terms and conditions of the applicable plans. Additional details of participation in these benefit plans will be provided if an employee receives an offer of employment. If hired, employee will be in an “at-will position” and the Company reserves the right to modify base salary (as well as any other discretionary payment or compensation program) at any time, including for reasons related to individual performance, Company or individual department/team performance, and market factors.
